City of the Beasts

Author: Isabel Allende
Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Inc.
Publication date: 2002
Paperback: 453 pages

The first novel of the trilogy is actually written by Isabel Allende for young adult. Being uninformed and tempted by the cheap price offered at Aksara clearance sale, I had picked up the book because of the promising adventures content. But no worries, the book turned out to be well written for ALL ages.

The main character here is Alexander Cold, a fifteen-year-old boy. Alex's mother needs to undergo a chemotherapy for her cancer somewhere in Texas therefore all her three kids are entrusted with their grandmothers. Alex sisters will stay with grandma Carla while Alex must go to New York to her eccentric grandma Kate Cold in New York.

Meanwhile, Kate announces that she'll be taking Alex with her to the Amazon jungle during his visit. Kate is assigned by the International Geographic to have an expedition with certain members such as the photographer, anthropologist, physician and guide to the dangerous, remote wild of South America, on the border between Brazil and Venezuela on a mission to document the legendary yeti of the Amazon known as the Beast.

Beside enjoying Alex thrilling adventure, I am very much mesmerized by the description of the Amazon rainforest. The author had done a wonderful job in describing nature beauties along with a detail research on Amazon. This is a light novel with serious environmental issues. Enjoyable.
