It All Goes Back to Our Hearts

Cowardice asks the question, "Is it safe?"
Expediency asked the question, "Is it politic?"
Vanity asked the question, "Is it popular?"
Conscience asked the question, "Is it right?"

And there comes a time when one must take a position
that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular,
but one must take it because
one's conscience tells one that it is right.

--Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.--

A friend asked me to teach Business Ethics at his college. This is a new subject for me. What a challenge. Without thinking twice, I said yes.

Then I applied, attended the interview and presented a teaching demo. To my surprise I was accepted. Since then on I prepared myself with everything related to 'Business Ethics'. I browsed here and there and did book hunting, too (my favorite part). The subject turned out to be interesting. If in the old days people thought that business and ethics were two different things but now looking at several financial scandals such as: Enron, WorldCom,Tyco, Arthur Andersen, etc, people begin to consider that business ethics is definitely important. Ehm ...do I sound too serious now? Okay, let me stop here :D

Although most business' objective is making big profit but doing the ethical business will never hurt you. Whenever you are placed in a confusing condition to choose which one is right or wrong, just listen to your conscience.  And last but not least, follow your heart.

To put the world right in order,
we must first put the nation in order,
to put the nation in order,
we must first put the family in order,
to put the family in order,
we must first cultivate our personal life,
we must first set our hearts right.

Hi Riana,
this is Daniel from Germany. I am a happily married father of two twin boys of the age of 12 months. I found your blog by chance while trying to find out the author of the saying of which I now know that it was M.L. King, Jr. Constantly repeating the speech in the movie "V for Vendetta", which is truly one of the most important speeches for humanity but not being able to understand where the saying is from, I googled "vanity asked the question" and I ended up on your blog which is just packed with more beautiful thoughts and sayings. Thanks for this!
Will keep an eye on your blog.

All the best to you and your family!
Daniel

Riana,

thanks for your response.
Please do not reduce your blog to the level of "your two cents" because that´s not what it is. You and your blog have the power to change people´s minds, to make them feel what they really are and what their souls are made of.
I do not know how many people at your place are still being able to see the real values of life. What I am recognising more and more each day here in Germany is that people become dumber with every footstep they take as the society an politics are enabling, yes, even pushing them that way! How can that be? Has everyone forgotten what the true way of life is about? Is it me who´s wrong about that question? Do I have to force me and my children to watch the TV all day to get as stupid as most of the society? I don´t think so. But why are they forcing this development as hard as they can? People still being able to think seem to be kind of dangerous for our greedy and war-hungry leaders.

Although I am sure that most of you and your well educated fellows know it as it is so old and wise (and nevertheless up-to-date), I wish to post this link of Charlie Chaplin´s great speech in "The Great Dictator" as it is the most intoxicating one I know:

p.s.: The twins will love to be kissed when I will be back home in about 20 hours.
As if I knew it before I quit my job and changed it for another one which does not force me to be away from my family so often. As the polish quote (within your "two cents" says: "You have a lifetime of work, but your children are only young once" ;)

Reading you,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the comment. Glad to know that I could share the same view with you who lives at the other part of the globe.

Yes, it also happens here in Indonesia, corruption, consumerism, TV shallow programs that insulting our intelligence, political dispute, horrible traffic jam, and all other commotion that could lead us to frustration.

Thank God since I resigned from my 9 to 5 job for the past two years, and starting as a freelancer, I could be away from those craziness and focus more on my family that definitely will keep me sane.

Hope you're doing fine there. Wish you a great life ahead.

Best Regards,
Riana
